Description

2″ x 1 3/4″ Fluorite Specimen from Rosiclare Mine, Hardin Co., Illinois. Also known as fluorspar, is a mineral that was once mined in Illinois, but is no longer produced in the United States.Illinois was once the leading producer of fluorite in the country, with the most important deposits in the Cave-in-Rock and Rosiclare areas of southern Illinois. The first fluorite was mined in Illinois in 1842, and production peaked in the 1960s. However, the last Illinois mine closed in 1995 due to high mining costs and competition from overseas producers.
