Description
An excellent Maya mask from Mexico, ca. 800 – 1250 AD. This beautifully detailed Post-Classic example is 7-1/2” high and portrays one of the monkey deities wearing a small hat.Rows of teeth are visible in the open mouth and the large eyes indicate a state of trance. Monkey deities were credited with teaching the Maya how to write. Heavy mineral deposits and stuccoremnants.
