Description

Offered is a striking and scientifically interesting dual-fish fossil association plate from the world-famous Green River Formation of Wyoming. This beautifully balanced specimen features two distinct genera of extinct Eocene fish preserved naturally on a single limestone matrix, perfectly illustrating the predator-and-prey dynamics of an ancient lake ecosystem. The Large Fish (Bottom): A well-preserved Diplomystus dentatus. Diplomystus was a surface-feeding predator characterized by its upturned, aggressive jawline, deep body, and a prominent ridge of dorsal scutes running along its back. The Small Fish (Top): A classic Knightia eocaena, a small, schooling freshwater herring that served as the primary food source for larger predators like Diplomystus. In fact, Diplomystus fossils are occasionally found with a Knightia still lodged in their mouths!
