Native American & Pre-Columbian Artifact Auction
Lot 293:
Description
16″ x 7 1/4″ EXTREMELY RARE! Tlinget Tribe Native American Oyster Catcher Shaman’s Rattle- Vibrant Paint and Shell or Bone Eyes intact. The oystercatcher bird is a significant spiritual symbol in the region, acting as an intermediary between the land and water worlds, which is suggestive of the shaman’s role between the human and spirit worlds. The figures on the back of the rattle depict a shaman performing a healing act, such as extracting sorcery from a patient. The joining of tongues or mouths between figures can signify a transfer of power from one to the other. While some rattles of this type are considered chief’s ceremonial instruments, many scholars believe the form originated as a powerful shaman’s object. *Neck has been broken and repaired*
