Description

2 1/4" Venus of Brassempouy Reproduction, on wood block for display

Venus of Brassempouy, Stone Age figurine. This 3.65-centimetre-tall prehistoric figurine fragment was excavated in 1894 from a cave near Brassempouy in the Landes region of south-western France. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the original figurine dates back to the Upper Palaeolithic, and is around 25,000 years old. It is one of the earliest examples of prehistoric art that accurately depicts a subject’s facial features. It is attributed to the Gravettian people, a culture of early modern humans that lived in Europe between 28,000 and 23,000 years ago.
