July Native American Artifact and Relic Auction
Lot 300A:
Description
Grouping of Large Ancestral Puebloan Painted Potsherds, found in New Mexico and in Arizona, Ex Lee Schexnaydre Collection. The Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi, were an ancient Native American culture that spanned the present-day Four Corners region of the United States, comprising southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southwestern Colorado. The term “Anasazi” is Navajo in origin, and means “ancient enemy.” The Pueblo peoples of New Mexico understandably do not wish to refer to their ancestors in such a disrespectful manner, so the appropriate term to use is “Ancestral Pueblo” or “Ancestral Puebloan.”
