Description
Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by William Godwin. Published by Printed for J. Johnson . ., London (1798). The Second edition, Corrected. After the death of Mary Wollstonecraft from complications of the birth of Mary Godwin Shelley, William Godwin immediately went to writing this book. Godwin probably in his state of mourning tossed in all on paper leaving nothing out which caused a great deal of debate, shock and disgust to the readers who had so greatly admired his wifes works. Some of the things included were her sexual indiscretions and suicide attempts. The contents of the book were to scandalous for readers of the time and Godwin had to revise it. Due to its contents (all truths) Godwin suddenly found himself the astonished victim of one of the British public’s ridiculous fits of morality. This book has a lot of wear and weathering. Front cover is detached but it is all there near as I can tell. Page edges are worn and tattered with page foxing throughout. Infront piece has cast a shadow on to the title page. 206 pgs 7" by 4 3/8"
