Lot 150:
Description
Large 1870’s to 1880’s CDV or Cabinet Card of Frederick Douglas. Frederick Douglas was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. Accordingly, he was described by abolitionists in his time as a living counter-example to slaveholders’ arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens (Wikipedia). This was a CDV most likely sent to Elmira by either her friend Consuelo Stewart (Clark) or Consuelo Stuarts father Peter Clark (Considered the Martin Luther King of the 1800’s). 9" by 7". Corner torn off but still good condition past that. Doesn’t have any publisher data on the card.
