High-End Native American Artifact Auction
Lot 490A:
Description
Authentic Chip of the “Plymouth Rock” mounted on a 10K solid gold stick-pin. Chipped from the original stone in 1850 by D.W. Clark, this was very common in the 18 and 1900’s, and is why the current Plymouth Rock is significantly smaller than its original size due to souvenir hunters who chipped away at it over the years. It is estimated that the rock was significantly reduced in size, possibly by one-third to one-half, by these activities. (Source: The History of Massachusetts Blog)
